Hood Hargett enjoyed hearing from Gary Sobba, tournament director for the Wells Fargo Championship, about this year’s event (May 3-6, 2018 at Quail Hollow Country Club). Sobba spoke at length about this year’s goal of increasing entertainment value at the Championship. This year’s schedule of events includes a concert with Martina McBride and SOL Fusion on May 2 at Phillips Place, as well as a Cinco de Mayo concert featuring Blue Dogs at Quail on May 5, which will include a break so attendees can watch The Kentucky Derby on big screens. This year’s tournament includes a massive youth clinic with five pros; a variety of celebrities at the Pro-Am, including Luke Kuechly caddying for Greg Olsen; and arguably the best player field in memory.
Sobba shared the new PGA Tour branding, “Live Under Par.” For the first time this year at the Wells Fargo Championship, attendees will be able to take pictures and video with their cell phones during the tournament, with the only requirement being that the phones are kept on silent. Also new this year – expanded concessions, and Uber will pick up and drop off across the street from the entrance.
