The Hood Hargett Breakfast Club was the first Charlotte audience to host Dr. Patrick Conway, president & CEO of BlueCross BlueShield of NC, who was our March 2018 Luncheon Series speaker. At the luncheon, members had the opportunity hear Dr. Conway’s thoughts on a variety of healthcare issues, from his perspective as both a practicing physician and as leader of one of the largest Blue Plans in the country. Dr. Conway opened his speech by identifying his priorities, which include data and analytics, customer satisfaction and partnerships with providers and businesses, with the ultimate goal of high quality care at a low cost. He noted that while usage has remained flat or declined, health care costs continue to rise.
Dr. Conway also spoke about BCBS’s emphasis on prevention and its recent $50 million investment in community health initiatives, as well as the trend toward increased transparency to consumers regarding price and quality care information.He answered several questions from the audience, particularly with regard to prescription drug costs. In his closing comments in response to a question about Amazon’s potential involvement in the healthcare industry, Dr. Conway noted his enthusiasm for disruption in the industry, and encouraged a shift to consumer-focused healthcare.
